On the day that negative doubles were first invented, they were used to say
"Hey, I have 4+ cards in the unbid suits!" By the afternoon of the second day,
they had been changed to "Hey, I have 4+ cards in the unbid majors!" That
said, if you make a negative double at the three level or higher, it's a really
good idea to have (1) cards in both of the unbid suits or (2) tolerance for
partner's first suit.
South could certainly have cuebid Diamonds at their first opportunity to show a
limit raise or better in Hearts, but the negative double isn't wrong with such
a strong holding in Diamonds. For the same reason, 3 NT looks to be a better
contract than 4 ♥, since it's likely that Hearts won't be breaking nicely. N/S
take five Heart tricks, two Clubs, two Spades, and one Diamond, making four.
If N/S play in 4 ♥, they'll take the same ten tricks since they can't afford to
ruff any Clubs in the South hand and still pull trump without a trump loser.
West will lead the ♦ J.

East has no reason to make a re-opening double with such strong Hearts. N/S
lose one Club trick, five Hearts, and one Spade, down one. If declarer tries
to pull trump, they'll lose control of the hand and go down more than one.
Ugh. Best is for declarer to play high Diamonds to shorten East's trumps and
then pull one round of trump somewhere in the middle of the hand. If E/W don't
tap declarer with Clubs at every opportunity, N/S might actually take seven
tricks. West will lead the ♣ K.

N/S take five Club tricks, two Diamonds, two Hearts, and two Spades, making
five. West may lead a small Spade, and declarer should play low from dummy
(the Spade finesse can wait if it's on). When the ♠ J wins the first trick and
East switches to a small Diamond, declarer should be able to figure out the
Spade position and drop the stiff ♠ K on the next round of Spades.

N/S take two Heart tricks, two Spades, and one Diamond, down two. If West
doubles 1 NT for penalty (if that's available to them), East will happily pass
and E/W will collect +500. Heh.
If East leads the ♥T (interior honor sequence), N/S will take six tricks.
That's unfortunate for E/W, but it's difficult to call that a bad lead. The
♦ 6 or ♣ 3 work much better.

With 4333 (flat) distribution, West has no reason to look for a 4-4 Heart fit.
That said, they definitely have a reason to look for a 5-4 Heart fit. When
East doesn't have five Hearts, West parks in the notrump game.
E/W take two Spade tricks, three Hearts, four Diamonds, and one Club. South
may lead the ♠T (i.e., there's absolutely no reason for them to try and set up
their Diamonds with zero HCP).

West knows the hand will play better in a major suit, so they use Garbage
(Crawling) Stayman to get there. If East had responded 2 ♦, denying a
four-card major, West would have bid 2 ♥. If East had only two Hearts, they
would have "crawled" up to 2 ♠ and played in their 4-3 Spade fit. On this
hand, East has a four-card Spade suit, so none of that matters. Yay.
E/W lose three Spade tricks and two Hearts, making two. South may lead the
♥ 2, declarer overtaking North's ♥ Q with the ♥ A. A small Spade goes to
North's ♠ Q, the ♠ K is cashed, and a small Heart is returned to South's ♥ K.
South should cash the ♠ A, but they'll be stuck for an exit. Since a Heart
will give declarer two Heart tricks (i.e., the ♥ J9 are in dummy), and a
Diamond will be run around to the ♦ AQ, South will be forced to exit with a
Club. North shouldn't play the ♣ Q, and declarer will win cheaply with the
♣ 9. The ♦ A, Diamond ruff, ♣ A, ♣ K, ♥ J, and Heart ruff get declarer up to
eight tricks.

E/W take three Spade tricks, one Heart, one Diamond, and four Clubs, making
three......if declarer correctly guesses the ♣ Q. That's unlikely, so expect a
smattering of –100 scores for E/W when E/W lose one Club trick and four Hearts.
South will lead a small Heart.

East shows their invitational hand and "signs off" in 3 ♥. If West was at the
top of their range (13+ to 15), they would certainly bid on, but with only 12
HCP, they justifiably pass.
E/W lose one Diamond trick, one Club, and one or two Hearts, making somewhere
around 3.5 Hearts. South will lead the ♠ J. Declarer should win in hand with
the ♠ A, play a small Spade to the ♠ K, and then ruff a Spade. It does North
no good to ruff with the ♥ J, so they'll discard a small Club (upside down
attitude showing a fondness for Clubs). The ♦ Q is next ducked to North's ♦ K.
North will cash the ♣ K and exit with a Diamond. There's no way that declarer
will know to win this trick on the board and lead the ♥T through North's ♥ J,
but that turns out to be the only way to hold the Heart losers to one. Oh
well.

East's double of North's artificial bid isn't insane--it just turns out to be
a.......freaking (SFW) disaster. In 2 ♥ redoubled, N/S lose one Diamond trick
and one Heart, making five for +1240. If you're E/W, be thankful that you
aren't playing for a dollar a point. If you are, that would be....um, carry
the two....right around $1,250 dollars.

For those who say "You need 48 HCP to be in slam!", please count the HCP on
this hand (subtracting HCP that are irrelevant such as the ♣ K). I come up
with 22. That's not very many.
E/W take three Spade tricks, three Hearts, five Diamonds, and a Heart ruff in
dummy, making six. Since there's no way to make the hand if North holds the
♠ K, South will be forced to finesse South for that card. When that works, the
hand is over. South will lead the ♣ 8 (MUD).

E/W lose one Spade trick, two Hearts, and one Club, making three. South will
lead the ♦ 7 (beer card and MUD). North should NOT cover if declarer sticks in
either the ♦ Q or ♦ J. South obviously didn't lead away from the ♦ A, and if
South has a singleton Diamond, declarer holds ♦ A76. In that case, the proper
play will be to cover the second high Diamond. If South has ♦ 76, nothing
matters, since declarer will never lose a Diamond trick. If South has ♦ 976,
then declarer has a stiff ♦ A and covering would be stupid.

East's negative double at this level shows 10+ HCP and four or more cards in
each major. West, with absolutely no preference between the two suits, asks
their partner to pick.
E/W lose one Heart trick and one Club, making five. South will lead the ♣ 6
(MUD). Declarer will ruff the Club continuation and pull trump in two rounds.
With North being MUCH more likely to be short in Hearts than South, declarer
will cash the ♥ K and lead a small Heart covering anything that South puts on
the table (i.e., any card that South puts on the table...covering South's
convention card, sandwich, or hand would be weird).

East's hand is about the minimum you'll ever hold for a game-forcing jump
shift. A 2 ♦ rebid wouldn't be wrong. When West tries to sign off in 3 NT,
East decides that the hand will probably play better in a suit contract, so
they rebid their Diamonds. West has a clear preference.

E/W lose one Heart trick and one Diamond, making five. North may lead the ♠ 8
(MUD). Declarer will win in their hand with the ♠ A, cash the ♥ A (noting the
fall of the ♥ J), and lead a small Heart covering any card that North puts on
the table. North will most likely play small on the second Heart, so declarer
will with with the ♥ 7 and lead the ♦T towards their hand. South will most
likely hop with the ♦ A, although it wouldn't be wrong to duck, and exit with
the ♣ J, taken on the board with the ♣ A. A Spade to the ♠ A, ♦ K pitching a
Club, and a Heart towards dummy's ♥ QT8 end the drama.

Although South has a Rule of 15 hand (HCP + number of Spades), this hand will
be a pass out at a few tables. N/S lose two Club tricks, one Spade, and one
Heart, making three. West will lead the ♥ K.

South does well to find the 5 ♦ sacrifice on this hand. N/S lose one Heart
trick, one Club, and two Heart ruffs, down two doubled for –300. East will
lead their stiff ♥ 3. West will win the ♥ A and return the ♥ 2 (lowest Heart
asking for a switch to the lowest ranking side suit). East will ruff and
dutifully return the ♣T. West will win the ♣ A and return the ♥T showing a
possible entry in Spades (highest Heart asking for a switch to the highest
ranking side suit) in case East holds ♦ J42 (i.e., East would be able to
overruff North's ♦T on the fourth round of Hearts). When North turns up with
the ♠ A, the hand is over.

South's double typically shows around 7-9 HCP and no clear direction. North
is welcome to pull the double with an unusual hand (♠ Kx ♥ A ♦ AKxxxx ♣ Jxxx
perhaps). E/W lose two Spade tricks, one Heart, and three Diamonds, down one
doubled for –100. That's too bad (for E/W), since N/S would have collected
only +90 for 1 NT making. Sigh. North will lead the ♠ 7.

Although N/S play XYZ, there's no reason at all for North to bid 2 ♦ to create
a game force on this hand. South's 1 NT rebid guarantees at least two
Hearts--where does North think that they'll play the hand? Yup, 4 ♥.
N/S lose one Heart trick and two Clubs, making four.....if East finds a Club
lead. That's very unlikely holding ♣ J765, since East is much more likely to
lead the ♦ J or a trump. On either of those leads N/S make five, when declarer
is able to pitch a Club on the ♦ Q.

E/W lose one Spade trick and one Club, making five. It's highly unlikely that
declarer will lead to their ♠T on the first or second round of Spades--why
should they? North will probably lead the ♦T (interior honor sequence).
Declarer will pitch a small Club from dummy and win in their hand with the ♦ A.
A Diamond ruff in dummy is followed by a Club to the ♣ Q and ♣ K.
Surprisingly, the best thing that North can do is to continue with a Diamond
giving declarer a ruff-sluff that they don't need! If declarer ruffs in their
hand, they'll be limited to only ten tricks, so they'll ruff on the board with
the ♠ 7 and pitch a small Heart from their hand. A Heart to the ♥ A and a
Heart back to dummy (covering any card that North plays) allow South to ruff,
but that's the last trick for the defense.
