When your partner opens one of a minor and your RHO bids 1 , your 1  bid promises five or more Spades. If you're sitting there with only four, make a negative double. East's pass after North's 2  cuebid denies a third Spade (i.e., they would have made a support double). If you aren't using that funny "X" card in the bidding box when appropriate, then you have your work cut out for you.

E/W lose one Spade trick, one Diamond, and two Clubs, making three. North will lead the  4. Declarer should win with dummy's  A and immediately ruff a Heart. A small Diamond towards dummy is next, and North will probably grab the  A and exit with their last Heart. Declarer will ruff again, pull three rounds of trumps, and cash dummy's two high Diamonds. It does North no good to ruff the third Diamond, since they'd be left with only Clubs and have to play away from their  A. When they refuse to ruff, declarer has now collected three Spade tricks, two ruffs, one Heart, and two Diamonds. That's eight tricks for those of you who are extra bad at counting. They'll now lead their last Diamond from dummy and ruff with their last trump. If North doesn't overruff, that's declarer's ninth trick. If they do overruff, they're once again forced to lead away from the  A. Nicely played!

There's no reason for South to bid their four-card Spade suit after their partner bids 1 . If North has a four-card major, then they have longer Diamonds and an opening hand and will bid 2  or 2  over South's 1 NT rebid to show their shape and values. For those of you who play XYZ, North's hand has no reason to waste time bidding 2  (artificial and game forcing), since they know where the hand will be played.

N/S take four Spade tricks, three Hearts, and three Clubs, making four. If West mistakenly leads a small Diamond, N/S will make five. A better lead is the  8 (i.e., shorter major on an auction where the majors aren't mentioned).

East makes one tiny try for slam, but when West can't show the  K, East parks in game ("game" isn't a literal parking space...this is a figure of speech). E/W lose one Spade trick and one Diamond, making five. There's no reason to take the Club finesse, since declarer's losing Club goes away on one of dummy's Diamond honors. South may lead the  3.

South's 3  bid is not forcing, but they probably don't want to be in game if North has a singleton Spade unless North has around 14 HCP. Whad'ya know?

N/S take four Club tricks, three Diamonds, one Heart, and two Spades, making four. East isn't going to enjoy being on lead. They may eventually choose the  7 (beer card).

E/W get to a great contract that doesn't happen to make on 4-0 Diamonds. Rats. North will lead a small Spade, declarer will win the  A, cash the  A (getting the bad news), and try and sneak a small Club past North as an entry to dummy (and for their ninth and tenth tricks). North, being more awake than usual, will grab the  A and cash four more Spade tricks, down one. Oh well.

When East shows a four-card major, West's hand is no longer weak. E/W lose one Spade trick and one Diamond, making five. South may lead the  A and a second Spade. If declarer plays a Diamond, North can hop with the  A and give their partner a Spade ruff. With that in mind, declarer will pull two rounds of trump ending in dummy before they lead the  8. North will hop with the  A and pull a third round of trump. Declarer will win in their hand (South sluffing a Diamond), play a small Spade to the  Q, and play a Spade back to their  J. South can discard one more Diamond on the third Spade, but they'll have no reasonable discard on the last one. Here's the position at that point:

Declarer:  J  9  Q3  A4
South:  KJ  Q652
Dummy:  8  5  KT87
North: T54  J93

If South pitches the  J, declarer will ruff a Diamond (the  K falls) and the  Q is their 11th trick. If South pitches a Club, declarer will cash the  A, play a Club to the  K, ruff a Club (the  Q and  J both fall), ruff a Diamond to get to dummy, and cash the good Club discarding the  Q. Nicely played!

North's 2 NT artificial bid guarantees at least invitational values. South's Diamond shortness improves North's hand, so they happily bid game. N/S lose one Heart trick and one Club, making five. East may lead the T. South's two losing Spades will go on North's long Clubs.

If either North or South mistakenly bids 4 , West will double...with vigor. E/W lose two Heart tricks, one Spade, and one Club, making three. North may lead the  J, which declarer will ruff in dummy. A trump is led to North's  K, and North will cash another high Heart and lead a second Club. South will win with the  A, but declarer's  K holds the defense to four tricks.

Never open 1 NT with nine cards in the majors. Never ever.

E/W lose one Heart trick and two Diamonds, making four. To play the trump suit for no losers, declarer will lead the  4 from dummy to the  J. South will win the  Q, and when declarer regains the lead, they'll play the  A trying to drop the  K singleton in either hand. That's a better line than playing for specifically  Q9 in the South hand (i.e., lead the T from dummy to smother the  9). South will lead the  K and play a low Diamond at trick two.

There's no reason for South to rebid 1 , since North (1) has no four-card major, or (2) has a four-card major with longer Diamonds and game-going values. If it's the second one, North won't pass 1 NT.

N/S take two Spade tricks, four Hearts, and one Club, making one. If West somehow finds the lead of the  4, N/S will be down one. Um, that's not happening. It's more likely that West will lead the  2 and N/S will take the first seven tricks. Take that Mr. I Lead Fourth Best From My Longest and Strongest Suit Every Time.

South's 2  bid shows four-card Spade support, since they didn't make a support double over 2 . I often hear from....er, advancing players.....that they KNEW that their partner had a five-card suit, so they didn't need to make a support double. Stop that. Your partner deserves to know whether you have three- or four-card support.

N/S lose one Club trick (finessing twice), two Diamonds, and one Heart, making three....if declarer successfully guesses the location of the  Q. That's not impossible, since East is known to have more cards that aren't as much Hearts. East may lead the  5 (low from an honor).

Even if you play Kickback for the minors, it's still a good idea to play Minorwood when a notrump contract is still in the mix. N/S take two Spade tricks, two Hearts, five Diamonds, and three Clubs, making six. West may lead the  7 (top of nothing against a notrump contract). If West finds the sneaky lead of a small Heart, declarer will duck it to the T (making seven). Heh.

N/S play that a Sandwich NT bid (i.e., a 1 NT overcall when the opponents have bid two suits) by a passed hand shows the unbid suits but denies a fifth card in the higher ranking suit. If South had five Spades and five Diamonds, they would have made a takeout double. If N/S weren't vulnerable, then North might pull the trigger on a 4  bid with the double fit in the pointy suits. As it is.....

E/W lose one Spade trick and one Diamond, making five. South will lead the  A and switch to a Spade at trick two when North plays the  J (i.e., discarding an unnecessarily high card when a switch looks appropriate asks for the higher ranking side suit).

North's hand isn't appropriate for a Michaels overcall, since they have intermediate values (i.e., 12-14 HCP). Note the importance of South's 3  raise. If South doesn't bid 3 , West will be able to bid 3  to ask their partner for a Spade stopper for notrump.

E/W lose one Spade trick and one Heart, making five. North may lead the  Q. Declarer's slow Diamond loser will go away on dummy's  K.

Nice auction! South has too big a hand for an immediate 3 NT bid over 1  (i.e., N/S play that 1M-3 NT shows 13-15 HCP and 3334 distribution). Once the double fit is found, North is pretty sure that 13 tricks are there in notrump (i.e., Spades could split 3-2, South might hold the  J, South might have additional Club length, South might have the  K or  Q, there might be a squeeze, the defense might screw up).

N/S take 13 tricks. East will lead the  K. Declarer's optimism will dim slightly when they see that their partner has only three Clubs, but once Spades split the hand is over.

Unfortunately, N/S are not in a good contract. South would have loved to sign off in 5 NT, but that sounds remarkably like the same bid South would use to ask for specific Kings. Maybe South can place 5 NT on the table, quickly put it back in the bidding box, turn to their LHO and say "Your lead." Yep, that'll work.

N/S lose one Spade trick and one Diamond, making five. That said, if East leads a Diamond to West's  A and West returns a second Diamond, N/S will make six when North's two losing Spades go away on dummy's long Diamonds. Oops.

If you're East, try not to stare at North's 1  bid when it hits the table. Also, try not to turn to South and ask "Will your partner bid 1  with as few as zero Clubs?" That gets you a visit from the director. You don't want that.

East would obviously have loved to play in 1  doubled, but when North sneaks in a 1  bid opts to play in a Heart partial. E/W lose one Heart trick, one Spade, one Diamond, and one Club, making three. South will lead their stiff  3.

Unforced jumps to the five level in a major when the opponents have bid one and only one suit ask for control in the opponent's suit. East, on this auction, would respond as follows:

1) With two fast losers in the opponent's suit, East would pass.
2) With a singleton in the opponent's suit, East would bid 6 .
3) With a protected  K (i.e.,  Kx), East would bid 5 NT.
4) With a void or the  A (i.e., first-round control), East would cuebid 6  (as they do here).

When East shows first-round control in Clubs, West takes the opportunity to show the  A. When East shows the  A, West can't resist bidding the grand. E/W take all 13 tricks assuming that declarer plays for the  Q to be doubleton. North will lead the  K.

If East passes 1 , South will pass as well--down two for –200. In 2 , E/W lose two Heart tricks, two Clubs, and one Diamond, making two. South may lead the  5.
