N/S take one Spade trick, three Hearts, and five Clubs, making three. If East leads a Heart, N/S will make four. Expect quite a few +430 scores.

If you and your partner play that a new suit by responder after a weak-two opener is non-forcing (marked on your convention card), then responder's bid is alertable. E/W lose two Spade tricks, one Club, and one Diamond, making three. North may lead the  Q or the  4.

If your partner opens 1  and you respond 1 NT, you're showing 6-10 HCP and denying a four-card major. If partner opens 1 , it's a good idea to play that your 1 NT response shows 8-10 HCP. What should you respond with 6-7 HCP and no four-card major? Well, if you have 5+ Clubs, you can make a weak preemptive jump raise in Clubs. With fewer than five Clubs, you'll respond 1 --sometimes with a three-card suit ( Kxx  Kxx  xxx  xxxx).

N/S take three Spade tricks, two Hearts, one Diamond, and three Clubs, making three. The hand plays one trick better from the North, since East can't lead a Diamond. East will probably lead a small Heart.

E/W lose one Spade trick, one Heart, one Diamond, and two Club ruffs, making two. North will lead their stiff  8, and declarer will win with the T. When South is in with the  A, they'll return the  9 showing an entry in the higher-ranking side suit (Hearts in this case). North will ruff, return the  7 (not interested in South playing a Heart back), and South will return a third Club. The  A is the defense's fifth trick.

When your partner opens, and your RHO makes a non-preemptive overcall, a cuebid of your opponent's suit is the only way to show a limit raise (or better) for partner. If your RHO makes a preemptive overcall (1 -3 ), a jump to game by responder is not preemptive--you're bidding to make.

N/S lose two Club tricks, making five. If East forgets to lead a Club, N/S make seven. Um, that's not gonna happen.

N/S lose one Spade trick, one Heart, and one Diamond, making four. Why not a Club loser? North's Club loser is a slow loser (i.e., the opponents have to play three rounds of Clubs before the  Q becomes a trick). If declarer works on the Diamonds, the  J9 can be pitched on the long Diamonds. If the defense attacks Clubs at every turn, dummy's Hearts can be thrown away on the Diamonds. West will probably lead the  Q.

East will probably lead the  K (asking for count) and switch to a Club at trick two when West plays the  2 (obvious switch asking for the lower-ranking side suit). N/S take five Spade tricks, two Hearts, two Diamonds, two Clubs, and an additional red card of East's choosing. Let's say that West leads the  9 (nothing is better). Declarer wins in their hand with the  A and plays off four more rounds of Spades, pitching two Hearts and one Club from dummy. West has to keep three cards in each red suit, and West has to keep all of their Clubs--if they pitch a Club, then declarer simply plays a high Club honor to the  A and claims. If East pitches down to one Heart, declarer plays the  K and then let's East win a Club trick. Unable to exit with a Heart or a Club, East will have to open up Diamonds which is a frozen suit. If East pitches down to two Diamonds, the  K followed by the  J (smothering the T) gives declarer a third Diamond trick.

N/S lose two Heart tricks, making five. Declarer may delay as long as they can, but they're going to have to eventually take the Club hook. If E/W don't take their two Heart tricks at the beginning, N/S will make six. East will lead the  3 (MUD).

North transfers to Hearts and bids 3  to show (usually) exactly five Hearts, game-going values (or better), and a side singleton or void. South bids 3 NT to deny a third Heart, and North pushes on to show their extra shape. When South bids 5 , North gambles that 6  should have play, since South has only two Hearts.

N/S lose one Heart trick, making six. East may lead the  2. Declarer will win with the  A, pull trump in two rounds, and duck a Heart to East's  K. The  K is ruffed in the closed hand, and the  A and a Heart ruff end the suspense.

North, knowing that South will probably raise Diamonds if they reopen with a double, goes quietly. The entire hand will be "Hey, let's not let declarer get to dummy!" That's a fun game. Declarer will eventually manage to scrape together three Heart tricks, two Diamonds, and one Club, down one. South may lead the  2.

N/S may lose one Club trick, since declarer is apt to guess wrong with the Clubs. East will lead the T, declarer winning with the  A. After playing off the  A and getting the  4 from East and the  2 from West, declarer will finesse for the  Q and pull the remaining trump. The  A is next, declarer pitching a small Spade, and the T is led, West following with the  5.

Declarer knows that West doesn't have the two remaining Clubs (i.e., East didn't lead a singleton Club), so the remaining two Clubs are either both in the East hand or split evenly. If they're both in the East hand, then it doesn't matter what declarer plays--there's always a Club loser. If the two remaining Clubs are split, it's equally likely that West started with  Q52 as it is that they started with  652. If declarer plays for the drop, they'll make seven.

South, with no extras, politely declines their partner's slam invitation. N/S take four Spade tricks, four Diamonds, two Clubs, and one Heart, making five. If West leads a small Club, declarer will win cheaply with the  8, but the blockage in the suit will keep them from ever collecting a third Club. Expect a lot of +430 scores when declarer guesses wrong in Hearts ( A and a small Heart nets declarer a second Heart trick).

E/W play NAMYATS--a convention that uses an opening bid of 4  to show a hand with 8-1/2 playing tricks and long Hearts (i.e., a hand that expects to make 4  but has little defense). An opening bid of 4  would show the same hand with Spades. Opening bids of 4  or 4  are then purely preemptive.

E/W lose one Club trick, one Heart, and one Spade, making four. North may lead the  6 or the  5 (MUD).
