West doubles and cuebids to show a HUGE hand. Note that East, while having better Diamonds, should still bid their four-card major over West's 4  cuebid. If West wanted to be in five of a minor, they'd have bid 4 NT over 3 .

If South leads the  A and continues Clubs, E/W will take 11 tricks. If South leads anything else, E/W make six when declarer is able to pitch two of dummy's Clubs on their long Diamonds.

If South denies a Heart stopper for notrump, North may push on to the good Diamond slam (i.e., South's 9-11 HCP would all be working). N/S take two Spade tricks, five Diamonds, and three Clubs, making four. West will lead the  A and continue Hearts.

South's hand is a bit too good to open 1  and jump shift into 3 . 4  would be a better contract, but can you really fault North for choosing to play in their nine-card fit rather than their six-card fit? N/S lose two Heart tricks, making five. West will lead the  4.

While 7 NT makes, it's an incredibly bad contract (as is 6 NT). Declarer has to (1) find the  Q and (2) pray that Clubs are 3-3. That about an 18% chance. If South leads a Spade, E/W will take 14 tricks.

This is a perfect hand for a "dummy reversal," in that declarer should ruff Clubs in their hand and pull trump with the shorter trump holding in dummy. West may lead the  Q. Declarer should win with dummy's  A and lead a Club towards their hand, East's  7 holding the trick which will get a good laugh at the table. East can cash the  K and give their partner a Heart ruff, but that's the last trick for the defense, as declarer has plenty of entries to their hand to ruff three more Clubs, pull trump, and pitch their small Diamond on the T.

If West leads a small Heart, N/S will make three. Any other lead, and N/S take 10 tricks. Declarer will win trick one with the  J, play a Club to dummy's  K, and finesse against East's supposed  K. When that card is where it should be, nine tricks roll home--five Diamonds, two clubs, one Heart, and one Spade. Sounds easy enough, but did you remember to cash the  A when you were in dummy with the  K? Crap.....

E/W lose one Spade trick and one Club, making five. South will lead the  8 (MUD) and declarer should NOT play the  Q or  J unless they think that North is an idiot. North, having read the analysis for the previous hand, KNOWS NOT TO COVER AN HONOR WITH AN HONOR unless it can promote a winner in partner's hand or their own. With no quick entry to dummy, declarer should play the  A and a small Club towards dummy. When South's  K wins by force, they're in a tough position. Most likely they'll cash the  A hoping partner has the  K. If they go that route, declarer will win the second Spade, ruff a Club, and take the Heart hook. If South opts to exit with a trump, declarer can get to dummy twice (once in trumps and once with a Club ruff) to ruff out North's  K and pitch the  J on dummy's  J.

West decides against bidding 3 NT holding  Kx. That's probably a wise move. E/W lose one Spade trick and one Heart, making five. That's assuming that declarer gets the Spades right (small to the  9 losing to the  K). South should lead the  8 (MUD).

When you overcall 2 NT after a weak-two opener, it's a good idea to have three cards (or more) in opener's suit. With only two cards in the suit, you can't hold up enough times to exhaust opener's partner of cards in that suit if they split 6-3.

N/S take two Spade tricks, five Clubs, and two tricks in the red suits when East runs out of safe exit cards. West will probably lead the T, and declarer will win with dummy's  A and play  A and another Club. West is in with the  K and will probably clear the Spade suit, but declarer will win in hand, cash the remaining Clubs (pitching two Diamonds from dummy), and run the  J to East's King. East can't cash the  A without giving declarer an overtrick, so they'll simply exit with a Heart to North's  AQ giving declarer their ninth trick.

North will regret overcalling 1 NT, but that's their correct bid. N/S lose one Spade trick, one Club, two Diamonds, and two Hearts, down one doubled for –200. East will lead the  7 (beer card). The proper way to play the Heart suit is small to the  K and then a small Heart from each hand hoping for a doubleton  A in the West hand.

West has a tough bid over 3 , since they know that the opponents have at least eight Hearts between them (i.e., East would have reversed with a four-card Heart suit). It's reasonable though to assume that the Hearts will split evenly, since nobody is bidding them. North will lead the T (interior honor sequence), and E/W lose three Heart tricks, one Diamond, and one Spade, down one.

If N/S could bid 8, they would. E/W take eleventy billion tricks. If North had doubled the final contract, South would have lead the  4 looking for a void in North's hand. With no double, South will probably lead the  A and declarer will claim at trick one.

E/W play that a double of a two-level overcall after a 1 NT opener is primarily for penalty. When West doubles at the three level, East knows that it's for takeout, since West has at most a singleton in Spades. E/W lose two Heart tricks and one Club, making four. South will probably lead the  J, and declarer should pitch two Clubs on the  AK, ruff the third, and lead the  Q.

Now that you're allowed to have an agreement with partner to open 1 NT holding a singleton honor, don't overdo it. Make sure you're 4441 when you do so, and that your singleton is the Ace, King, or Queen. Also, make sure you don't have a viable rebid. South's hand is probably the best example of when it's a good idea. If South opens 1 , and partner responds 1 , South would be forced to rebid 2  when their hand looks A LOT LIKE NOTRUMP! If South rebids 1 NT over 1 , they're showing a hand with no singleton or void and 12-14 HCP (0 for 2).

N/S lose one Spade trick, one Heart, one Diamond, one Club, and a Club ruff (if West starts with  A and another Club which is unlikely). West may lead the  8 (MUD).

North's 4  bid, opposite a passed hand, is wide ranging, but at this vulnerability, expect them to have their bid. South doubles 5  for penalty, but North is hearing none of that and bids on. If E/W bid 6 , South will double and North will bid 6 . Heh.

N/S will probably make seven when East leads the  Q and declarer pitches their stiff Heart on dummy's  A. Trump are pulled in one round, and the  J is led, East covering and declarer winning with dummy's  A. A Heart is ruffed in the closed hand, and the  8 is led finessing against East's T. Voila.

If South had a singleton Club or the  J, they'd bid 4 NT and get to a good slam. As it is, the slam needs East to have the  K, West to be unable to overruff dummy when declarer ruffs their losing Clubs, and/or Hearts to be 3-3. Don't be in this one....please...I beg you.

N/S lose one Heart trick, making six. East may lead the  Q. Declarer should win in their hand, pull one round of trump, cash the other high Club, and ruff a Club with dummy's  8. When West can't overruff, declarer should play a small Spade to their hand and ruff their last Club with dummy's  9. A Heart to the  A allows declarer to finish pulling trump, and a small Diamond to the  Q allows declarer to claim six giving the opponent's a Heart at trick 13. Note that West has to be careful not to discard Hearts on the 3rd and 4th Clubs or N/S will make seven when declarer finesses successfully against East's  Q.

When the opponents have bid two suits and 3 NT is a possible contract, your cuebid of one of their suits is a show, not an ask. If the opponents have bid only one suit, your cuebid is an ask ("Hey partner, do you have a stopper in this suit for notrump?").

E/W take four Spade tricks, four Diamonds, and one Heart, making three. South will lead the  J and declarer will claim at trick one when North correctly ducks.

E/W lose three Diamonds and two Clubs, making two. South will lead the  A (asking for attitude) and continue Diamonds at trick two and three. When North is in with the  Q, they'll play the  A (South signaling encouragement with the  5) and continue Clubs.

If South held  J62 and North held T3, a fourth Diamond at trick six would spell defeat for the contract in that North could overruff dummy's  9, and South's  J would be promoted into the setting trick when declarer would be forced to overruff with a high honor. That doesn't work here, but it's fun to think about.

  1. Alert, XYZ bid showing 6+ Hearts and slam interest

If you're South and you don't play XYZ, you'll be forced to trot out New-Minor Forcing at your second turn. Your partner will bid 2  (showing four Spades without denying three Hearts), and you'll be in a quandary. With no forcing bid short of game, you're going to have to bid 4 , and slam will be missed if your partner holds as little as  AQxx  KQx  Kxx  xxx. In XYZ world, responder's jumps to the three level after 1x-1y-1z are forcing, slammish, and show extra length in the suit bid. Here, when North denies three-card Heart support, South reluctantly signs off.

N/S lose two Heart tricks, making five. East has to be sure to cover the  9 when it's led from dummy, but as long as they do, the  Q8 will always take two tricks (declarer can't get to dummy enough times to shorten their trumps for a Trump Coup).

N/S take three Club tricks, three Diamonds, two Hearts, and one Spade, making two. The hand record says that 2 NT doesn't make if North is declarer, but that assumes that East will find the magic lead of the  J. That's not gonna happen. East will lead a small Spade to West's  K, West will return the  9 to East's  A, and East will clear the suit. When East get's in with a Diamond, they'll cash out.

The  A pulls the last trump, and the  A and  J are next, declarer overtaking with dummy's  K. When the  Q falls, declarer can pitch their  Q on the long Club and drop their hand on the table (literally). West can then share with declarer that the Diamond hook was on as well, so that North isn't overly proud of their accomplishment. Stupid West.
