There's no need to preempt in fourth (pass-out) seat, so West's 2  bid shows an intermediate hand--not a weak one. East's bid doesn't guarantee a five-card Spade suit, but West judges that their hand is probably perfect to play in a Moysian (4-3) fit.

E/W lose one Diamond trick and one Club, making five. Declarer should plan on pitching two Clubs on dummy's Hearts and ruffing the fourth (East's hand is the master hand). South may lead a trump, and declarer should win in their hand and play a Club towards the  K. South will win with the  A and play a second trump. Declarer can win again in their hand, ruff a Club in dummy, play off the  AK pitching Clubs as planned, and play the  A and another Diamond. North will win with the  K and play a Heart, but declarer can ruff in their hand with the  3, pull the remaining trumps, and claim.

E/W lose three Club tricks, one Diamond, one Heart, and one Heart ruff, down one. Suppose North leads the  6. South wins the  A, cashes the  K, and plays another Club. North wins with the  J, cashes the  A as South pitches their small Heart, and gives their partner a Heart ruff. The  A is the sixth and final trick for the defense. Nicely defended!

N/S take two Spade tricks, three Hearts, four Diamonds, and three Clubs, making six. West may make an aggressive lead of the  Q (shorter major), and declarer should duck a Heart in both hands to "rectify the count." What does that mean? Declarer started the hand with 11 top tricks, and needs to find a twelfth. If someone is going to be "squeezed" on the hand, declarer has to lose a trick early on so the defenders will find it harder to discard as the hand progresses. In this case, when Hearts split 3-3, declarer doesn't need a squeeze or to find the  J.

East bids 1 NT intending to show a three-card limit raise for Spades. South's 2 NT bid is not the Unusual 2 NT--it just behaves like it. The Unusual 2 NT bid is a direct seat overcall of an opening bid. North is thrilled to be able to show their Club suit, and is equally happy to bid again after East competes to the three level.

N/S lose one Club trick and one Heart, making five. E/W can hold declarer to ten tricks if East decides not to lead a Spade. The defense is easiest if East leads a Heart, since West can win with the  A and return the  7, East playing a second Club when in with the  A. West has to discard their small Heart on the second Club retaining five Cards in each of the pointy suits (Spades and Diamonds), or declarer will be able to ruff that suit good.

If you're South, don't forget to raise partner to the level of your total trumps--partner is showing a six-card suit, you have four, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 trumps means you should bid 4 . West should picture one of the red Aces in partner's hand and bid what they think they can make. East, figuring that their partner already pictures one of their red Aces, is happy to show them the other.

E/W take fourteen tricks. North will lead the  K.

N/S lose three Spade tricks, making four as long as East leads a Spade. That's not gonna happen. It's more likely that East will lead a trump, since North may be wanting to ruff a few Hearts in dummy. That doesn't work out very well when declarer pulls trump in two rounds, plays off the top two Hearts and then ruffs out East's  Q pitching all of dummy's Spades along the way. They'll be able to ruff two of their Spades in dummy but will lose a Spade at the end, making six.

If South had a hand that would have opened in first or second seat, they'd bid 4  (or a new suit) after partner's cuebid. As it is.....

N/S lose two Diamond tricks and two Clubs, making three. West will lead the  K (asking for count) and switch to a Club at trick three when partner discards the  5 under the  A (upside-down attitude showing a fondness for Clubs).

Not bad since 4  was making. East may lead the  2, but declarer has no way to avoid losing three tricks.

South asks for a five-card major and North says "Go fish." N/S take two Spade tricks, two Hearts, two Diamonds, and ............ East will probably lead the  9 (best), and declarer will win the  J in their hand with the  K. The  J is next run to the  Q, and since West is unable to return a Spade, their best play is the  4 (MUD). Declarer will win with the  A and play the  9, East winning with the  A and exiting with a small Spade. Declarer will win with the  A, discarding the  4 from their hand, and run Clubs, pitching Diamonds from their hand.

Since West has had to hold on to the  Q and three Hearts, they'll have come down to one Diamond. Declarer can now play a Diamond to the  K and exit with a Spade, and West will have to open up the Hearts (a frozen suit). Nicely played!

North, with game-going values and a "Smolen-shaped" hand, intends to bid 3  (their shorter major) over 2  to show exactly 5-4 in Spades and Hearts respectively. Unfortunately, South ruined their plan by holding four Spades. Stupid South.

N/S lose two Heart tricks, one Club, and one Spade (or two if they start with the  K), down one or two. Oh well. West needs to find a Heart lead, or N/S will have a better time of it. It's more likely that they'll lead a minor eliminating declarer's minor-suit loser.

Although 7  makes, E/W don't want to be there needing a 3-2 Spade split and 3-3 Diamonds. South will lead a trump, and declarer will win in dummy with the  A and immediately ruff a small Diamond. A Spade to the  Q shows that Spades are dividing 3-2, and declarer ruffs another Diamond and cashes the  K, pulling the last trump. The  7 is now led to the  K, and when both opponents follow to the  A, declarer can claim, making seven.

A lot of East players will bid 4  over 2 , but that's an overbid. North may lead the  A, since nothing looks any better, and continue Clubs at trick two when partner encourages. E/W lose one Heart, one Diamond, and two Clubs, making three.

East bids what they think they'll make. If South leads the  Q (best), declarer will duck the first round and win the continuation. If declarer makes the mistake of going up with the  A, North can jettison their  K to preserve an entry to their partner's hand. Knowing that they eventually have to play a Spade, declarer might as well get it out of the way at trick three, and when North has no more Clubs, E/W end up with 11 tricks--five Diamonds, one Club, two Hearts, and three Spades.

In 2/1 land, a 2  or 2  response to partner's one-level opener does not deny a four-card major. It simply says "Hey partner, I'm bidding my hand as naturally as possible. If it turns out that I have a four-card major, I must have a longer minor."

If East leads the  K, declarer should duck the first round and win the continuation. When West has the  A and no more Clubs to play (I see a theme), N/S will take 10 tricks--six Diamonds, three Hearts, and one Club. Another way to look at it is E/W win three tricks: the  K, the  A, and the  A.

Since West would have gone to game over a 1 NT rebid by partner, it seems only fitting to go to slam over a 2 NT rebid. E/W lose one Spade trick, making six. North might lead the  5 (MUD) giving declarer a free finesse, but it doesn't matter as the Spade loser won't go away.

E/W lose one Heart trick, one Diamond, one Spade, and one Club, making three. North will lead the  K, asking for count, and switch to a Heart at trick two attacking dummy's entry. South should play low no matter which Heart declarer plays from dummy. Declarer can take the Club finesse once, but with South's  A9 poised over the  K6, there's no way to get to dummy to do it again.

With some shape to their hand, East wisely checks to see if partner has a five-card major. If it turns out that they don't, East would happily sign off in 3 NT.

E/W lose two Spade tricks and one Club, making four. North, with no interest in ruffing a Diamond, will probably lead a small Heart. Declarer should win in the dummy and lead the  9, letting it run to North's  Q when South follows low. North will exit safely with another Heart, and declarer will win in hand with the  K. The  A is next followed by the  A, the  A, the  A (a sequence sure to get a chuckle from all at the table), and the  2.

If South wins with the  K, they'll have to either lead into dummy's KJ or give declarer a ruff-sluff by playing their last Heart. If South is clever, and throws the  K under the  A, declarer can exit with a Spade to North's now stiff  K. North, with only Clubs left, is forced to lead into declarer's  J. Nicely played!

When you open 2 NT, and partner transfers you to a major, bid game if you have four-card support.

E/W lose one Heart trick and one Club, making five. What happened to the Diamond loser? Well, let's assume that North leads a Spade (best). Declarer should win with the  A, ruff a Spade in dummy, play a Club to the  A, ruff another Spade, and play a Club to the  K, noting the fall of the  Q. Declarer should now play the  A and exit with a Heart. North, down to  Q  K  K9863 can win the  K but has to either give declarer a ruff-sluff by playing their last Spade or lead away from the  K eliminating declarer's Diamond loser. Ugh. If North is able to exit with a Club, declarer can always play a small Heart to dummy to take the Diamond hook.

West would probably balance if the vulnerability were different. Alas. N/S take three Diamond tricks, two Clubs, one Spade, and one Heart, making one. East will lead the  3 to their partner's  A and West will return the T (top of their remaining doubleton). East, with an entry in the  K, will probably win the  K and clear the suit, but ducking trick two would have been better. If they do duck, declarer should win trick two and immediately play back a Spade.

Why would they do that? Well, think about the difficulties West will have when East cashes their fourth and fifth Spade. If they throw a Club, declarer can play  A and a Club to West's stiff  K to gain a third Club trick. If they throw a Diamond, declarer can play  AK and wrap up four Diamond tricks. How about pitching two Hearts? That allows declarer to cash the  A and exit to East's stiff  K to gain a third Heart trick. All roads lead to ruin. Declarer will end up with one Spade trick, two Diamond tricks, two Club tricks, and two more tricks that West will gift them.

East takes a false preference back to partner's first suit, since West could easily be 6-4 in the majors. E/W lose one Spade trick, two Hearts, and one Diamond, making three. North may lead the  4.

When partner makes a DONT bid (Disturbing Opponent's No Trump) and you have an opening hand in support points, bid 2 NT. It's artificial and alertable and asks partner for more information about their bid. Partner will artificially bid 3  to show any minimum hand. If they don't bid 3 , they'll make a natural rebid showing their suit if they have a single-suited hand or showing their second suit if they have a two suiter. On this hand, N/S have an easy auction to get to 4 .

N/S lose one Heart trick and two Clubs, making four. West will lead the  K, asking for count, and continue with the  A when partner shows an even number of Clubs.

West is afraid that partner will bid 3  if they double 2 , so they pass dejectedly. N/S lose one Spade trick, two Hearts, one Diamond, and two Clubs, down one. West may lead the  K and switch to a Club at trick two when partner shows an odd number of Diamonds.
