North would have transferred at the two level and passed their partner's 2  reply, but when West raises East's Spades, that option no longer exists. A 3  bid at this point would show exactly five Hearts and game-going values. The only way to play at the three level in a competitive auction of this sort is to use Lebensohl. A 2 NT bid is artificial and asks partner to bid 3 . The 3  forced bid is sometimes passed (picture  85  J42  Q  QJ98742), but just as often the partner of the notrump opener/overcaller will correct to 3  or 3  (to play).

N/S lose one Spade trick and three Hearts, making three. East will probably lead the  Q.

West's 2  bid shows 5+ Spades and 10+ HCP (Five & Dime). E/W lose one Diamond trick and one Spade, making five. North may lead the  K although the  K is also defendable.

N/W play Inverted Minors, so North doesn't have a 2  constructive raise available to them. They might have bid 3  originally, since they play that as a limit raise in Diamonds, but with nine HCP, they're a little light. South should probably double the final contract.

E/W lose one Spade trick, one Heart, two Diamonds, and one Club, down one. South will lead the  K or the  A. If declarer had the T, they might choose to finesse twice in trumps, but without that card, the proper line is  A and a low Heart.

South's 5  bid shows first-round control of Diamonds, a slam-going hand, and Heart support. North should probably have bid 5  to show a control in Spades, but they didn't.....so what.....sue me.

N/S take 16 tricks. East will lead the  2 (small from an honor in a supported suit).

E/W lose three Spade tricks and one Club, making three. North will lead the  K, and if South doesn't overtake will probably switch to a small Heart. When South is in with the  A, they'll cash the two top Spades and probably switch to a Diamond, but West will drop their hand on the table and claim.

When you have a running minor, and you have enough tricks to be in slam, by all means be in slam in your minor. If you are content to be in game, by all means be in notrump--unless those stupid opponents of yours have five cashing tricks.

E/W take six Diamond tricks, one Spade, one Club, and a spare trick in one of the side suits, making three. If North leads a safe Diamond, trick two will be a Club to establish declarer's ninth trick. If North leads something that isn't so much a Diamond, declarer should run it to their hand to guarantee a ninth trick.

South's 2 NT rebid shows 18-19 HCP and 5332 shape. North's 3  bid is natural and shows five or more Hearts. South wishes they could be declarer, but that annoying 1 NT bid is sitting on the table in front of their partner. Stupid 1 NT Forcing.

N/S take three Club tricks, one Heart, two Diamonds, and four Spades, making four. Assume that East leads the  7 (nothing is better). Declarer will insert dummy's T and allow West's  J to win. Unable to continue Diamonds successfully, West will switch to a Club. Declarer wins in hand with the  J and leads a small Heart playing the T when East plays low. West wins with the  Q and exits with another Club. Declarer wins in dummy with the  K, cashes the  A,  A,  A, and exits with a second Spade. West wins by force and has to lead a Diamond away from the  K to dummy's  Q. Nicely played!

South is tempted for a brief moment to raise to game, but that would be bad Bridge. To make game they need (1) West to have the  K, (2) Hearts to split 2-2, (3) East to have the  A, (4) North to have a singleton Diamond, and (5) East to have the  K. Yup.

N/S lose one Spade trick and one Diamond, making five. Declarer should take the Club finesse, since they'll be able to pitch their fourth Spade even if the Club finesse loses. East will lead the  K. One thing to note as a defender--why didn't North open 3  if they have seven Hearts? E/W, when they see dummy, should have no trouble picturing the fourth Spade in the closed hand.

Even though N/S usually use 4  as a way to ask for keycards in Hearts (Kickback), it would be unwise to do so here, since it's likely that South would pass. In this case, that wouldn't be the end of the world, since 4  makes with overtricks. Just sayin' (just?).

N/S lose one Club trick, making six. If West tries cashing their  A on opening lead, N/S will make seven (South's Clubs can be pitched on the  K and North's long Spades).

E/W lose three or four Spade tricks, making four or three respectively. South will lead the  5, declarer will win with dummy's  A, and ruff a Heart.  A, Diamond to the  K, Heart ruff,  K, Club ruff, Diamond to the  J, and the  A for nine tricks. There's no way for the defense to keep declarer from scoring a trump trick in the end position. If South leads the  A and another Spade, E/W will be held to nine tricks.

At favorable vulnerability, South would have gladly passed North's penalty double. At equal vulnerability, it's a tougher call, since North doesn't know that South has three Spades and might be counting on collecting a Spade ruff on defense.

N/S lose one Heart trick, one Diamond, and one Club, making four. 2  would have probably been down three doubled for +800. East will lead the  3, and West will win with the  A. The  Q is next, declarer winning with the  A. With East marked with the  K, West is a shoe-in to hold the  A. Trick three should be the  7 to the T. When West wins with the  A and cashes the  J, the hand is over.

N/S play Lebensohl in reverse auctions, so North's 3  bid is game forcing (i.e., they'd use a 2 NT relay to slow down the auction with 6-7 HCP).

If West leads a Club, it's all over, since N/S will take five Diamond tricks, two Clubs, two Hearts, and one Spade. If West finds the lead of the  2, declarer will play low, and East will have to win the  K to keep declarer from winning cheaply with the  J. The  3 is next, and North should win the  Q with the  A maintaining a "positional stopper" in the  9. A positional stopper is one that will keep the defense from cashing their tricks if a particular defender wins the next trick. If West holds the  A, the  9 is not a stopper.

North has no reason to play in 6 --what are they planning on ruffing to gain an extra trick? N/S take two Spade tricks, five Hearts, four Diamonds, and one Club. West will lead the  K and declarer should duck to rectify the count. Declarer starts off with 11 top tricks and needs something good to happen to find another trick. By ducking trick one, they set up a squeeze situation. On this hand, it doesn't matter since the Diamonds split 3-3, but let's imagine a scenario where East has one more Diamond and West has one more Heart. West will continue Clubs at trick two, and declarer will win in dummy with the  A. Declarer will cash the  A,  AKQ of Diamonds, and four Hearts. Ten tricks have been played, and what does everyone hold now?

South:  J  3 T
West:  65  Q
North:  K2  6
East:  QT  J

On the last Heart, West is squeezed and has to throw a Spade to keep their  Q. Declarer throws the  6 from dummy (it's done its job), and East is squeezed as well. They'll throw their T to keep the  J, and the  K2 in dummy take last two tricks. What fun!

South has a difficult hand to bid after East's 2  opener. 3  seems wrong--they have a four-card Spade suit. 4  as Leaping Michaels is wrong--that would show a hand that's 5-5 (or better) in Spades and Clubs and within a trick of game. 3 NT would probably make if East was on lead, since it's highly unlikely that they'd lead the  A from  AQxxxx.

N/S lose one Spade trick and one Heart, making five. The proper way to play the Diamonds is  A, small to the  K, and ruff a Diamond high. East may lead the  5 (MUD).

South's 2 NT rebid is alertable for this N/S pair, since they play Kokish Relay. If you don't play that, then 2 NT shows 22+ HCP and is not alertable.

N/S take four Club tricks, three Diamonds, three Spades, and three Hearts, making seven. They don't want to be in the grand needing the Heart finesse. West may lead the  3, but nothing matters.

If West had control in both Diamonds and Hearts, they would have bid 4 NT over East's 4  control bid. E/W lose two Heart tricks, making five. Declarer will have to guess the Clubs correctly, but it's hard to get it wrong since it's a one-way finesse with the doubleton  Q in the slot. Yawn. North will lead the  6 on the auction.

North takes a flier with 3 NT--partner may hold  Qx or the Hearts may divide 4-4. The second part turns out to be true. N/S take four Spade tricks, two Clubs, and three Diamonds, making three. East will lead the  2, and E/W will gobble up the first four tricks, declarer pitching a small Club from each hand. Let's assume that West exits with a safe Spade at trick five. What's the best way to play the hand from this point?

When you hold AKJ in two suits and can take one of two finesses, you should combine your chances by trying to drop a doubleton Queen in one of the suits before taking the finesse in the other. It's a better idea to try and drop the doubleton Queen in the suit where you have more cards, so on this hand, declarer will play off the  AK. When the  Q doesn't appear, they'll take the finesse against West for the  Q. Yay.

North will wish they hadn't opened. E/W lose three Club tricks and two Hearts, making two. The best defense is for South to lead a trump, but they'll probably lead the  4. North will win with the  K and return a trump. Declarer will duck, and South will win the  Q. With no trumps to return, they'll play the  7 to partner's  A. North can pull two more rounds of trump with the  A6, but declarer is now in control.

They'll win the third trump in dummy, play a Spade to the  A, and pull the last trump with the  K. A declarer with some skill in squeeze play will now play off two more rounds of Spades and survey the situation. After nine tricks, here's what everyone holds:

East:  9  Q9  9
South:  KT5  Q
West:  AJ84
North:  76  6

Declarer now leads out their last trump, and South is undone. If they throw the  Q, East's  9 is good, and the Diamond finesse will pick up the last two tricks. If they throw the  5, dummy's last three Diamonds will be good, making three. Ugh. South should build a time machine, go back 6-1/2 minutes, and lead the stupid  Q. Or better yet, go back eight minutes and force partner to pass.

How does declarer know that South has the  K? Well, North has shown up with  AK and  AJ. If they held the  K as well, they'd have opened 1 NT.

It's a good idea to have some firm agreements in place as to what to do when your 1 NT opener (or overcall) is doubled for penalty. Obviously systems are on over the opponent's double, so if you have a five-card major or are 4-4 in the majors, by all means make a transfer bid or use Stayman. If you have a five-card minor, it's nice to play that a redouble asks the 1 NT bidder to bid 2  and you will pass or correct. With no other options, you'll pass (alertable) and opener will redouble (or bid a suit of their own). When your partner redoubles, you can (1) leave it in and make it, or (2) bid four-card suits up the line.

N/S lose one Heart trick, two Clubs, and one Spade, making three. Since West is known to have the  A, the proper way to play the Spade suit is to run the  J. East will lead the  3.

East is in a tough place pretty much the whole hand. Assume they lead a Spade (nothing is better). Declarer should win in hand with the  Q, play a Spade to the  A, cash the  K (pitching a Club from their hand), cash the  K, and play another Diamond to the T and  Q. East can't return a Club or a Heart without giving up a trick, so they'll continue Diamonds (declarer pitching a Club from dummy). At this point, declarer can count 11 tricks--five Spade tricks, two Hearts, three Diamonds, and one Club. Declarer can cash the  A (pitching another Club from dummy), play the  K and a Heart to the  A, and play off the last two Spades. Here's the position before the last Spade has been played:

South:  9 T  9
West:  JT3
North:  5  AQ
East:  Q  K7

On the last Spade, West has no troubles, and declarer can pitch the  5 from their hand, but what's poor East to do? They can't throw the  Q without making the T good, so they'll bare the  K. Declarer now takes the last two tricks with the  A and  Q. Nicely played!
