East has more than enough to accept the invitation to game. E/W lose two Spades and ... well, nothing else. How does that work? Try this--it will be fun!

First notice that Diamonds is a frozen suit. If North leads a Diamond, E/W lose no tricks, and the same thing happens if South leads them. So have South lead something else--how about  AK? Since nothing matters, we'll go with that. We'll also have them continue a Heart at trick three. Declarer wins with the  A, cashes the  A, the  K, and ruffs a Heart in dummy. Now declarer plays off all of dummy's trumps (yes, all of them).

After eight cards have been played, dummy has  8  Q9  K3, North has  K  QT85, declarer has T  AJ64, and South's hand is irrelevant since they can't protect Diamonds or Hearts. When the  8 is played, North's goose is proverbially cooked. If they throw the  K, declarer cashes the  Q, the  K, finesses the  J, and cashes the  A. If North throws a small Club, declarer cashes the  K, finesses the  J, cashes the  A (dropping the  Q), and plays the now good  6. Nicely played!

North, having made a Negative double at their first turn, expects to bid 4  when it gets back to them if partner doesn't have a 4-card major. Surprisingly, partner does have four Hearts, and all is well and good until West spoils the party. Stupid vulnerability.

E/W lose two Spade tricks, one Heart, one Diamond, and one Club (if they're careful). If E/W go down four, then N/S are WAY too happy. Stupid N/S. If E/W don't sacrifice, N/S will lose one Spade trick, one Diamond, and one Club, making four.

If East thinks they can make 5  vulnerable, then West has no reason not to correct it to 5 NT on the double Spade stopper. Good thing they did too, since  A,  7 to the  K, and a Diamond ruff will put the kibosh on 5 . Stupid Diamond ruff. In 5 NT, E/W lose two Diamonds, making five. North will probably lead the  Q against 5 NT.

If N/S take the push to 7 , West is going to be very sad if they try and cash the  A. Very sad. In 6  doubled, E/W lose one trick in each side suit for down two. North will probably lead the  K.

E/W lose one Heart, making six. The safest line is to cash the  A and ruff a Spade. When the  K drops, declarer can safely pull trump, pitch a Spade on the  Q, and claim (the East hand is the master hand). If the  K hadn't fallen, declarer may have looked to setting up the Clubs and having dummy be the master hand. The  K will be the normal lead.

Don't be tempted to rebid 1 NT with the East hand--a 1 NT rebid guarantees that you don't have a singleton or void. E/W take four Club tricks, one Diamond, two Hearts, and three Spades, making four. Declarer mustn't try to go after Spades until they've set up the Clubs. The Club suit has the potential to gain four additional tricks, the Spades can gain only two if they aren't already good. South will probably lead a small Heart.

West is going to be surprised when 2  goes down two. Huh?  K lead,  2 continued to the  A, Spade ruff with North's  3,  K to the  A, and the defense still has the  Q,  A, and two Diamond tricks in the South hand to collect. Ugh.

West has to be careful not to fall in love with their hand. 15 HCP? Think again. While the  A and  AK are nice cards, the two red-suit Queens could end up being useless (as they are here). E/W lose two Spade tricks, and both red-suit Kings, making three. If West makes a game try, East may not accept, since they have a 10-loser hand. North should lead the  J.

If N/S bid 5 , someone is going to bid 6 , and N/S is going to have to bid 6 . That's going to get doubled and go down four for –800. That's a great score against a vulnerable slam, but a pretty crappy score against a vulnerable game. N/S, knowing this, will happily bow out and let E/W play 5 . E/W lose one Club, making six. The best line of play is to lose a Club, ruff two Clubs and two Spades in the long hand, and claim. The other line would be to try and ruff three Hearts in dummy. South has a difficult lead on the auction--the  5 turns out to be safest.

It doesn't hurt for South to try and sneak their 2  bid in--partner knows that they don't have six of them (i.e., they would have shown them immediately after 1 NT). N/S lose one Spade trick, two Diamonds, and two Clubs if East is tricky enough to underlead their  K at trick two. A way to make this work is to play that "Ace asks for attitude, King for count" against suit contracts. East can lead the  A on opening lead, and when West plays the  5 (upside-down attitude) to show that they have the  Q, the  3 at trick two will result in West returning the  J. If East doesn't do this, then they might have one more chance if declarer plays  A and a second Spade. East will have to jettison the  K under the  A--not easy to do.

South's hand is barely worth an invite, and some might pass 1 NT. N/S take three Diamond tricks, four Club tricks, and two major-suit tricks depending on which suit the defense attacks. East will probably lead the  6 on opening lead.

South borrows a King from their partner so they can balance and keeps it for the rest of the auction. North bids their hand as if they hold eight HCP--not quite enough to jump to 2  after West's redouble. South, holding 15 HCP (remember the borrowed King?) has enough to raise partner's free bid (North didn't have to bid--they chose to) to the two level. N/S lose two Spades and two Clubs, making three. East will lead the  4 (lead top of nothing when you've raised partner's suit).

West's hand isn't quite good enough for a game-forcing 3  bid, but what can you do? E/W take three Club tricks, five Diamond tricks, and two major-suit Aces, making four. South will probably lead the  Q, and declarer will duck when the  K appears. North will probably switch to a small Spade to South's King, but that will result in E/W making five (the  Q is now the 11th trick).

East makes a game-forcing Checkback bid of 3  to check on partner's majors. E/W lose one Heart, one Diamond, and one Club, making four. It's likely that South will lead their singleton Heart. Declarer should win in hand, taking the  J with the  K, and play a Club towards dummy's  KQ. Once South takes the  A, declarer can win the return with the  A and pitch their remaining minor-suit cards on the  KQ, making five. A Diamond on opening lead is the only way to hold E/W to four--difficult lead to find.

South's 2 NT bid shows 11 HCP or an equivalent amount in playing strength. North has an easy raise to 3 NT with what appears to be almost-running Hearts. Surprisingly, the Hearts don't behave, but the other suits do. N/S take two Club tricks, two Diamonds, one Spade, and four Hearts (declarer should finesse West for the  J, since that's a 50% play compared with 36% for 3-3 Hearts). West has a difficult lead and might play the  A before switching to the T.

South has an easy pass of 2 NT. N/S take three Club tricks, one Diamond, one Spade, and three Hearts, making two. An effective way to play the Heart suit is to start with the  4 from the closed hand. If East ducks, the T will knock out the  Q and the  A will drop the now stiff King. If East takes the  K, declarer can get to the board with the  J (the  Q drops doubleton) and finesse West for the  Q.

If East bids 2 NT over partner's 2  raise, it shows a game invitational hand. They don't have that. E/W lose two Diamond tricks, one Heart, and one Spade, making three. South may lead their singleton  Q out of desperation.

South doesn't quite have enough to make a vulnerable 2  overcall. Declarer can take two Club tricks, two Hearts, three Diamonds, and a Spade ruff, making two. That's if they're careful. If they try and do something silly like pull trump, they'll come up a trick short. South will probably lead a high Spade on opening lead.

1 NT Forcing applies only when opener's RHO passes after responder's 1 NT bid. In this case, South is free (encouraged) to pass. E/W lose one Club, two Hearts, and a Heart ruff. South is sure that their partner has a doubleton Heart, and they're also fairly sure that partner has a Spade bigger than the six.

You don't want to be in a grand slam needing a 2-2 trump split. The hand easily makes seven though when trumps and Hearts both behave (2-2 trumps, 4-3 Hearts). West has no good opening lead--good thing it doesn't matter.

Once North bids 4 NT showing two keycards and the  Q, South pauses to do a little math:

1) North doesn't have a 4-card major, but does have both major-suit Aces. That's five tricks with potential for an extra Heart trick or ruffs in dummy.
2) There should be two Diamond ruffs in the closed hand, plus the  A
3) Dummy should have at least five Clubs on the auction

Five Club tricks, three side-suit Aces, two side-suit Kings, the  Q, and two Diamond ruffs equals 13 tricks. 7 NT would simply be greedy. As it turns out, there are three Spade tricks, four Heart tricks, one Diamond trick, and five Club tricks in notrump. That equals 13 as well. Stupid math.

N/S lose one Spade trick, one Club, and one Diamond, making four. East's best defense is to lead the  2 on opening lead (they can't afford to lead a Spade without giving up their trump trick). West wins with the  A and returns a second Club. North can ruff, but has to play carefully the rest of the way out so they don't lose trump control.  A, ruff a Diamond, Heart to the  K, ruff another Diamond with the  4, cash the  K, return to hand with the  J, and cash the  A. When trumps turn out to be 4-1, declarer can give East their trump winner and claim making four.

East's 2  overcall shows an opening hand. When partner shows a limit raise for Hearts, East suggests a notrump contract, and West happily accepts. Don't rule out 3 NT as a contract simply because you have a major-suit fit. With no ruffing value in West's hand, nine tricks are the limit. E/W take two Spade tricks, five Hearts, and two Clubs. South will lead the T on the go.

Even pairs who play Kickback (using 4  as a keycard ask when Hearts are trump) might choose to bid 4 NT on this auction to avoid the awkward moment when partner passes your 4  bid.

E/W lose one Spade trick, making six. The best feature of West's hand may very well be the  J. Nice card. If South leads the  Q on opening lead, E/W will make seven. They'll survive the lead of anything else--a trump looks right.

N/S take three Spade tricks, one Heart, and six Diamonds, making four. East should lead the  K on opening lead. Declarer can't afford to duck, since it appears the opponents can take four quick Club tricks (they can't due to the suit blockage).

Simple auction. Amazing that declarer can find nine tricks on this extremely friendly hand. E/W take three Spade tricks, two Hearts, two Diamonds, and two Clubs before the party abruptly ends. South should lead the  J.

It's not a particularly good slam, but it's not the worst you'll ever be in (probably not the worst one today). Since declarer can't afford to ruff two Diamonds and still pull trump, they'll need to take a Diamond finesse. When it wins (yay!), they'll still need Diamonds to be 3-3 and trumps to be no worse than 4-2 (yay again!). East should lead the  8 on opening lead.

Win in dummy with the  Q. Finesse West for the  K (you might play off  Q,  K, and  A to pitch your Club, but you're living in a fantasy world--if the finesse for the  K loses, you won't be able to pull trump when a Club is returned) and ruff a Diamond with the T. Now,  J, Heart to the  Q, and  AK. When the  A drops the  K and T, breathe a sigh of relief and claim, making six.

Once North takes a second bid, vulnerable, opposite a silent partner, South has a moral duty to bid game. N/S lose one Spade, one Heart, and one Diamond. It will be pretty easy to count East's hand once they show up with three Hearts and six Spades, so the  Q will likely be with West. East will lead the  K on opening lead.

Most E/W pairs will play in 3 . The N/S pairs that get frisky and bid 3  will be rewarded by a resounding double from West (–300 is not a good score to have when the opponents, left to their own devices, can scrounge up only +130). E/W lose three Club tricks, making four. North will probably lead the  3 (low from an honor).

West will be very tempted to double the final contract, but where are their tricks outside the three obvious ones? N/S lose two Hearts and two Diamonds, making three. Why not three Diamonds? South is going to have to execute a Trump Coup. That involves shortening their trumps to the same number (or fewer) than their opponent.

Let's suppose that West gets off to a Heart lead. East takes the  A and  K and returns a third Heart. Declarer wins in dummy with the  Q, plays the  A (throwing a small Club), and ruffs a Spade. Now  A, Club to the  K, and ruff a second Spade. South and West are now down to nothing but trumps: Dummy has  K T  965, Declarer has  A9875, and West has  KQJ64.

Declarer plays the T and West is in trouble. If they duck, declarer will ruff a Spade or a Club with a low trump. West will have to win that trick, but now they're leading into declarer. All declarer needs to do is make sure they use the  A to take a gigantic Diamond. Nicely played!

N/S take three Spade tricks, two Hearts, and possibly two Diamonds, down one. E/W will have difficulty untangling their tricks, but declarer won't feel much sympathy. East will lead a small Heart on opening lead.

East has a difficult call after West's Michaels bid. 4  wouldn't be wrong, but 4  seems a bit better. West's 4  bid should show tolerance for Clubs and a strong suit. It's doubtful that East will go on, but you never know.

E/W lose only one Spade, making six. Declarer will need to ruff one Spade in dummy before pulling trumps. North will probably lead the  5 (MUD) on opening lead.

Bizarre hand, although you likely won't get to play it. Not sure how many tricks either side can take--odds are that one side or the other can take seven tricks in notrump, but not according to Deep Finesse. Oh well.....
