4th-Suit Forcing usually occurs with responder's second bid, but not always. Responder's 3  bid is needed in this auction to determine whether North has a doubleton Spade (North denied three Spades when they bid 3 ). N/S lose one Spade trick, one Heart, and one Club, making four. A reasonable lead is the T. Declarer wins trick one and immediately plays the  K. West has to win and get a Heart on the table right then, or the defender's third trick will evaporate. Dang.

E/W lose one Spade and one Diamond, making five. The vulnerability keeps N/S from successfully sacrificing in 5 . South will likely lead the  A on opening lead, and no matter what they switch to at trick two, the  A will always be a trick.

Some Wests will double or overcall 3 , and they'll regret it when North doubles for penalty. Stupid North. N/S take six Diamond tricks, two Hearts, and a Club, making three. If East leads a Club (likely on the auction), declarer might make an overtrick. Stupid East.

Once East bids 2 NT, it's a good idea that West doesn't raise to game. They've bid their hand once when they bid 2 --don't bid your hand twice. If South leads the  J, E/W will make 3 NT. South's best lead is the  J--guaranteed not to cost a trick. E/W take one Spade trick, one Heart, three Diamonds, and two Clubs--down one.

North's 2 NT bid shows around 11 HCP. South, with 13 HCP and a couple of tens is more than happy to raise to game. East might lead a small Heart on opening lead. N/S take three Spade tricks, three Diamonds, and three round-suit tricks. Either East or West will eventually be endplayed and forced to lead away from either Hearts or Clubs respectively.

Passing and doubling at your next turn often shows a hand with cards in the first suit bid (Clubs in this case). West's Spade bid lessens the chance that North will bid Spades after South's double. N/S take one Spade trick, two Diamond tricks, two ruffs with dummy's trumps, and three Hearts in declarer's hand, making two. East, not relishing being on lead, will do well to lead the  A and continue Clubs at trick two.

West will probably lead their singleton  Q on opening lead, although since it's pretty much impossible to get to East's hand for a ruff, it will go for naught. South should win the first trick in their hand with the  K. N/S lose one Club, one Spade, one Heart, and two Diamonds. The best way to play the Heart suit (on the auction) is to lead the  Q through West and then lead towards the T (or let West hold the trick with the  K).

East might have chosen to double instead of raise to 2 --either one would be acceptable. E/W lose one Spade trick, one Diamond, and two Clubs. North will likely lead the  K on opening lead, switching to a small trump at trick two when partner shows an odd number of Clubs.

South doesn't really have any other reasonable way to show their hand than to rebid 2 NT. N/S lose two Spades and a Club, making four. South will probably use their entry to dummy ( Q) to finesse for the  K. When the  A is subsequently played, the bad break in Spades is discovered, and declarer will play off their red-suit winners, pitching Clubs from dummy until West takes their trump winner. The  A would be an effective opening lead followed by a second Club when East encourages.

South would preemptively raise North's Spade overcall to 3  if North had been able to overcall at the one level. Raising to three on this auction should show an invitational hand. N/S lose two Heart tricks, a Heart ruff, and a Diamond, making three. East, knowing that partner can't have three Hearts, should find the lead of the  3.

When you have 6-5 distribution, feel free to reverse or make a jump-shift rebid with fewer HCP than you might normally have for such a sequence. N/S lose one Heart and two Clubs, making four. East will likely lead the  A on opening lead and continue with the  K. Declarer might go wrong playing the Heart suit, as West will play low when the T is led from the board and North might let it ride--down one.

North wasn't overjoyed having to bid 4  holding only three of them, so the final double will be a bit of a relief. N/S have to defend accurately to beat the contract two tricks ( J to the  A,  3 back to be ruffed showing an entry in the lower-ranking suit,  2 to the  A, second Diamond ruff).

6  is a better contract than 6 NT on East's known Spade shortness--East would not raise to 2  without a singleton or void or better rebid. If East had four Spades and a singleton Diamond, they would have rebid 1 . If East had six Clubs, they would have rebid 2 . E/W lose only one Diamond, making six, when all of the suits turn out to be friendly. South might lead a trump on opening lead, although a small Spade wouldn't be as dangerous as it looks.

East's 2 NT bid shows either 12-14 or 18-19 HCP. The way to tell that it's 18-19 HCP is that they'll bid 4 NT over 3 NT (duh). E/W take five Club tricks, two Spades, one Heart, and one Diamond. There won't be time to get a second Diamond trick in addition to the Spades, since South will switch to a Heart when in with the  A (assuming they don't lead a Heart on the go). If South gets fancy and starts with  A and another Spade, E/W will make five (Diamond towards the  Q at trick three).

North doesn't have quite enough to probe for game, but it's close. Even if they bid 2 NT (Wold 2 NT) to learn more about South's hand, South will respond 3  (minimum with four Spades) and North will shut it down in 3 . East will lead the  4 on opening lead. N/S lose one Heart, one Spade, and two Diamonds, making three. Double-dummy line is to win trick one with the  A, play a Diamond to the  A, Club to the  Q, and pitch a Heart on the  A. Although this works, it's dangerous, as declarer may end up losing a Club, two Diamonds, two Hearts, and a Spade for down one. Matchpoints is a silly game.

North should be careful about raising to game with wasted values in Spades and bad spot cards. Once South shows a minimum (7+ losers), 3  is a reasonable parking spot. N/S lose one Heart and three Diamonds. East will likely lead the  K and continue with the  A when dummy shows up with three small Diamonds and only spot cards appear from West and North.

This is an important point, since a Diamond continuation works if partner is now out of Diamonds, has a singleton (can ruff trick three), has a doubleton (holds the  Q or it's now singleton in North's hand), or has all the remaining Diamonds (North is forced to ruff in the long trump hand).

The vulnerability keeps E/W from bidding on, so N/S are able to buy the contract cheaply. N/S lose one Spade trick, a Spade ruff (assuming a Spade lead), a Heart, and two Clubs. West is likely to find the  8 on opening lead as everything else looks disgusting.

South has an easy raise to 4  when North preempts vulnerable. If N/S were not vulnerable, it would be a bit tougher, since North could have a far weaker hand. N/S lose one Heart and one Club, making five. East will lead the  J on opening lead and the hand is quickly over.

North's hand grows on the auction, and their Spade void and Club length (i.e., taking Clubs out of partner's hand) are more than enough to take one more bid. N/S lose one Diamond trick and one Club, making five. 6  will be a great sacrifice for the E/W pairs that are convinced that 5  is making. East will likely lead the  A on opening lead.

South has a fairly easy pass of 2 NT. N/S take two Spade tricks, two Hearts, two Diamonds, and two Clubs, making two. East can pretty much close their eyes and grab any card on opening lead and it won't matter (well, randomly selecting the  K or  K would be unfortunate). The  Q,  5, or  6 will be popular choices.

West has enough to rebid 1  even though their partner has passed, and that turns out to be the final contract when North doesn't have quite enough to raise Hearts. E/W lose three Spades and one Heart, when declarer can lead from dummy only one time and chooses to lead a Club. North will probably lead the  K.

West resists doubling the final contract for fear that partner might think that it's still for takeout. It wouldn't be, since they could have doubled 1  earlier if they had a hand that warranted making a takeout double. N/S lose one Spade, one Club, and three Hearts, down one. Once the opponent's have both limited their hands (South with 1 NT showing 12-14 and North with 2  showing a sub-invitational hand), it becomes a bit safer to make a minimum offshape takeout double. If West bids 3 , East will be a bit surprised, since they could have bid 1  over 1  with 5+ Hearts and 8+ HCP. 3  plays remarkably well, when  QJ fall doubleton and the  AQ lie in the South hand. E/W lose two Spade tricks and a Diamond, making four. North will probably lead the  K on opening lead.

If East finds the Spade lead, 6  will go down one. Unfortunately, they're going to lead their partner's suit. Stupid East. The play of the hand will be fascinating for those who are in slam. After winning the opening lead with the  K, declarer will pull trump in two rounds, play off the  A and  K to exhaust West of Clubs, and play the  A and a third Diamond (pitching a Club from dummy). West, down to nothing but  KT3  QJ65 will have to either lead away from the  K or play a Diamond, giving declarer a ruff-sluff. Nicely played!

How does declarer know to play West for the  K? Well, West will have shown up with zero HCP in Hearts, three in Diamonds, and one in Clubs. Even not vulnerable, that would have been a sub-minimal 2  opener without the  K.

In a team game, where game bonuses are so valuable, East would likely have raised to game. In Matchpoints, getting a positive score is important, so a pass by East is justified. E/W lose one Diamond, two Hearts, and a Spade, making three. If North leads a small Heart on opening lead, South will have to lead a Diamond back so North can collect their Diamond trick--not an easy switch.

Holy cow! Once West sneaks in a 5  bid, East's hand becomes insanely powerful. South will likely lead the  A on opening lead. Declarer will need to find the  Q, but South, holding 5+ Clubs on the auction, three Hearts, and at least three Spades is likely to hold fewer Diamonds than North. Also, North will need to hold the  Q to justify their 2  overcall--otherwise they bid 2  on an eight count.

E/W lose one Diamond and one Club, making five. South may lead the  Q on opening lead. Diamonds is a frozen suit (i.e., whoever leads the suit loses a trick).

E/W will struggle in 1 NT, taking three Spade tricks, one Heart, and two Diamonds, down one. South's best lead is the  3.

E/W take four Club tricks, two Hearts, and two Diamonds. Unfortunately, that adds up to eight tricks--not nine. Stupid math. South will lead a major suit, but it doesn't matter. There simply aren't enough tricks for E/W. Good contract though......

New-Minor Forcing is a bid that occurs after opener's 1 NT rebid--not opener's not-so-much 1 NT rebid. That doesn't make responder's new suit any less forcing. N/S lose two Heart tricks and a Diamond, making four. West will likely lead the  A on the go.
