Straightforward auction to get to 3 NT. South transfers and bids 3 NT to show a 5-card Heart suit and the values to be in game. East may lead the  Q, and N/S take four Club tricks, two Diamonds, and four major-suit tricks, depending on which suit they go after. West can't afford to unblock in Diamonds, since that would cause the  7 (beer card) in North's hand to grow up.

North doesn't quite have the hand to raise South's Hearts or double West's Spades, so they choose to pass. A 2 NT call would be interesting, but East will raise to 3  on the vulnerability. North will likely lead the  8. E/W lose one a trick in each suit, making three.

If South decides to bid 2  after East's 1 NT opening to show both majors, N/S will likely compete to 3  over 3  and go down one in that contract as well. In 4 , E/W will have to start with a Spade to get their ruff, and that's highly unlikely on the auction. More likely, West will lead a small Diamond, and N/S will take five Spade tricks, two Club tricks, and two Diamond ruffs. The  K will become a trick if the defense decides to grab their  A early.

East's 1  bid shows extras--remember, if you open with a minimum hand and partner passes, you're done bidding. Some North's might double in the balancing position, but the auction will likely continue in a similar fashion. E/W lose two Spades and two Diamonds, making three when the Hearts behave.

South has already bid their hand when they doubled 2 , so passing North's 3  bid is correct. N/S lose one Spade, two Diamonds, and a Club. East will likely choose the "safe"  J lead. South wins with the  A and plays  A and another Spade. West wins the  K and plays the  8. Declarer, wary of the Heart ruff, hops with the  K and clears the trump suit. Since there's no way to untangle the Hearts for a Diamond pitch, E/W will get their two Diamond tricks to go with the  A and the  K.

West will likely lead the  K (asking for count) and switch to a Spade at trick two (they need to hope that their partner holds a Spade honor or declarer will be able to ruff a Diamond with dummy's  3). N/S will lose one Spade, one Heart, and three Diamonds.

A nice auction to reach four Spades, tempered by the fact that 3 NT making four will take all the matchpoints. Stupid Bridge. N/S lose no Spades, one Heart, a Heart ruff if East finds the  A lead, and a Club. If E/W don't get the Heart ruff, N/S may very well lose two Hearts anyway, when declarer finesses East for the  Q. Oops. East may choose a trump on opening lead or possibly the  5.

If South passes East's 1  overcall and North reopens with a double, N/S will collect +300 with double-dummy defense. That's unlikely. At most tables, N/S will struggle in some number of notrump(ses?), and their scores will range from +120 to –100. West will lead the  6 on opening lead, and declarer will do well to collect one Spade trick, three Hearts (leading to dummy's  9 to knock out the  A), two Diamonds, and two Clubs.

Some N/S pairs will compete to 3 , down one, thereby rescuing the E/W pairs from 3 , down one. Thanks N/S pairs. On the lead of the  Q, E/W lose two Spades, one Diamond, one Club, and a Spade ruff. North knows that their partner doesn't hold a third Spade, since South didn't make a support double (remember those?).

West probes for a 4-4 Spade fit before bidding the notrump game. South is likely to lead the  4 on the auction, although nothing really matters. E/W take four Heart tricks, two Spades, three Diamonds, and a Club on a Diamond lead. If South leads a Spade, E/W take four Heart tricks, four Spades, one Diamond, and one Club.

North will likely lead the  Q, and E/W lose one Spade, one Heart, and one Club, making four. Declarer can safely duck the first trick, planning on ruffing their third Club. North can't switch to a Spade without giving up their trump trick, so they'll probably continue Clubs. After trumps are drawn, declarer can safely pitch their small Heart on dummy's  Q, guaranteeing their game against any Heart distribution.

It's usually a good idea to play that a double of a strong notrump opening in the balancing seat is for penalty. Usually. In this case, East redoubles confident that their partner can make 1 NT. North will likely lead the  Q, and the race to 1 NT begins. N/S will be able to collect three Heart tricks, two Spades, and a Diamond, but where's their seventh trick coming from? Clubs is a "frozen" suit, meaning whoever leads the suit first loses a trick. E/W can take two Spades, one Heart, two Diamonds, and two Clubs. That equals seven for the math impaired.

Once West is able to bid 3  showing five or more, East can bid 3 NT with confidence. E/W take six Diamond tricks, two Hearts, and a Club before N/S get anything going. If South is too aggressive, they're going to gift E/W an extra trick--patience is rewarded on this deal, and South is better off leading a safe Diamond.

If N/S were vulnerable, West would most likely double for penalty. At equal vulnerability, 3 NT looks like an obvious bid. E/W will take seven Club tricks, two Spades, and whichever red-suit King they want to lead towards at trick nine. North is likely to lead the  9 on opening lead.

East may lead the  J on opening lead, and N/S will take two Spade tricks, five Hearts, and a Club, making two. If East decides to compete, they may have trouble picking a bid. If they double, partner may decide to leave it in. If they bid 2 , it shows five or more Spades and a weak hand. If they bid 2 NT (Lebensohl) and correct 3  to 3 , they'll be rewarded with a top score, but that doesn't quite match what they're looking at. Interesting hand.

If South leads a small Diamond on opening lead (the  2 is best), declarer will have a hard time ducking the  J, but that's their best play. If they decide to grab the  K, they'll need to scramble to take three Hearts, and two Clubs for down one. If they duck, North will switch to the  2 at trick two. South wins the  Q and needs to play  A and another Diamond while they still have the  K as an entry to their established Diamonds. Declarer can once again cash out for down one. If South continues with  K and a third Spade, E/W will make their contract.

West's 1 NT bid, showing 7-10 HCP and one or more Spade stoppers, ends the auction quickly with N/S vulnerable and unable to compete further. E/W take three Spade tricks, three Diamonds, and two Clubs by simply ducking two rounds of Clubs. North's best lead is the  9, but East's Heart spots (T876) prevent N/S from taking too many Heart tricks. If North leads the  Q, declarer should not cover.

Many hands follow this same pattern--partner opens, your RHO overcalls a suit that you control, you have an opening hand, and the vulnerability says that you're better off declaring. Bid 3 NT. Simple as that.

South will dutifully lead the T, and E/W will collect three Spade tricks, one Heart, six Diamonds, and a Club, making five. South's best lead, interestingly enough, is the  8. Declarer should hop with the  A and lead a small Spade from dummy. North will need to split their honors and East will win the  A and play back a second Spade. North can cash the  K, but that will be the last trick for the defense.

East is under no obligation to bid after West's 2  bid, since West is a passed hand. North will lead the  8, and N/S quickly take the first four tricks--either with T,  A,  Q,  A, or with T,  A,  3,  A. Either way, those will be the last tricks for the defense, as East has two entries to dummy to repeat the finesse in Spades.

E/W can afford to complete to 2  on the vulnerability. South will lead the  5 to North's  K, and North does best to return a Club, East winning the  A. Now a small Heart to dummy's  A, Heart back to the  K, a Heart ruff, and a small Spade from each hand, South winning with the T.

At this point, South has a dilemma. They can't play a fourth Heart without giving declarer a ruff sluff. Their best course of action is probably to play a small Club for North to ruff, but East can play carefully to collect two Spade tricks, two Hearts, a Heart ruff, and two Clubs, for down one.

The vulnerability keeps E/W from competing further. N/S lose one Spade, two Diamonds, and a Club, making three. East will most likely lead the  J--an interior honor sequence, but as long as they don't play  A and a second Club, E/W will collect their four defensive tricks.

East has no reason to leave the contract in Hearts with 3433 shape. Declarer will likely attempt to finesse North for the  Q once South shows length in the black suits. With Hearts splitting badly, three Heart tricks is all that East can collect, but South is going to be squeezed on the run of Hearts and Diamonds and can't protect both Spades and Clubs. After eight tricks, South will be reduced to  QT6  KJ, and declarer can play  A and another Club to endplay South and force a Spade lead away from the  Q. Nicely played!

3 NT makes if Spades split 3-3, the  K is onside, or North holds either the  J or the  K. Nope. It's not E/W's lucky day, but they'll have a lot of company. North will lead a small Heart at trick one.

While East has a hand that justifies a 3  cuebid, it gets the pair unnecessarily high when N/S weren't going to complete to the three level anyway.

N/S lose one Club, two Diamonds, and one Spade. Declarer has to be careful to strip West of safe exit cards before finessing in Spades. Once West wins with the  Q, they'll have to either continue Spades away from the  9 or play a third round of Clubs giving declarer a ruff sluff.

Strange as it might seem, East has to lead the  2 on opening lead to beat 3 NT, and West has to be smart enough to insert the  8. North can win, but what then? If they take their five Diamond tricks, what do they lead from dummy at trick seven? If they lead a Spade, they'll get their two Spade tricks, but that's only eight tricks (five Diamonds, one Hearts, and two Spades). If they lead a Heart towards their hand, West can hop with the  K and play the T through to get three Club tricks. East can then exit with a Heart to dummy's  A for declarer to finesse the  K, but as long as East covers the  J, declarer is still a trick short and has to give West a Spade at the end. Brutal.

West's spot cards in the majors make their hand look more game going than invitational. E/W collect four Diamond tricks, two Spades, two Hearts, and two Clubs when the  J falls doubleton. Some South players will lead a small Club, but that doesn't look all that appealing. A small Spade (or the  J for that matter) works best.

North is always going to game after South opens, but it's still a good idea to check to see that partner has a fourth Heart before bidding game in your major. South might have held  8  AQ7  KQ7  KT832, and an immediate raise in Hearts would still have been correct.

N/S lose one Spade, one Heart, and two Clubs, for down one. If East tries to get a Club ruff, it will be at the expense of their natural trump trick. That said, a lead of the  Q is probably reasonable.

This hand is bizarre, and it's a shame that you won't get to play it. Oh well. E/W lose only three Club tricks--although the suit is blocked, North will eventually get their  Q. If South continues to bid, they're going to regret it. This is one of those hands where it's impossible to get to dummy in time to keep from going down a couple. After  A,  K, and a Spade ruff, East can simply exit in either minor suit, and South's goose is cooked. They can't get to dummy to take a Heart finesse, so they're reduced to laying down the  A. When the  K doesn't fall, South concedes a trump trick and that's that. Rats.

Holding five trump, there's no reason for North to be concerned about the location of the  Q--with 10+ cards between the two hands, the  Q will take a trick only if Spades split 3-0 with the  Q offside. Not worth thinking about.
