North thinks about opening 3 , but it doesn't seem quite right in first seat when they have a third Heart. After East rebids 1 NT, XYZ (2-Way NMF) is still on, so West correctly bids 2 , artificial and a relay to 2 . North, wanting a Club lead, happily Doubles. East has nothing to say at the moment, and West bids 2  to play.

North should lead the  8. E/W lose two Spades, a Diamond, and two Clubs.

As long as N/S are careful, eight tricks are all that E/W can muster. A reasonable lead is the  9--very unlikely to cost a trick. South has to hold up the  A until the second round to kill the East hand. Not difficult to do when North signals that they hold an odd number of Clubs. E/W take one Club trick, three Diamond tricks, two Spade tricks, and two Hearts. Declarer should overtake the  Q with the  K in dummy to lead a small Diamond. Then cash two more rounds of Spades before exiting with another Club.

The defense has to be crisp to hold N/S to four. Opening lead  A, Heart to the Ace, Diamond back. N/S will have to lose a Spade eventually. Any other defense will allow N/S to make five. If E/W do get in the auction at some point, they will very likely push N/S into a 5  contract.

Nice spirited auction. East will lead their singleton Club, and E/W will collect the  A, a Club ruff, and a Diamond trick for down one.

Some West's might open 1 NT, and it isn't wrong, but with so many Aces and Kings, the hand will probably play better in a suit. N/S compete for a bit, but the vulnerability gets the better of them, and they bow out. E/W lose one Heart and two Diamonds. A Club would be a safe lead.

West's 1 NT rebid shows 12-14 HCP and a balanced or semi-balanced hand, so it's reasonable for East to bid 2  to play. E/W lose three Spades, two Diamonds, and a Club with accurate defense. South's best lead is the  10.

E/W lose one Spade and one Club. The  K is a good lead. Trick two should be a Club finesse. There's nothing that North can return that will cause any trouble--best is another Heart, but declarer can ruff in hand, pull two rounds of trumps, and play off big cards until North ruffs. Making five.

If you open 1 NT, and your RHO doubles your partner's transfer bid, it is often a good idea to redouble with 4+ cards in the artificial suit and no better bid. Again, the vulnerability keeps E/W from competing higher. N/S lose two Diamonds and one Club (the Spade loser goes away on the Hearts).

West is showing a strong hand with running Clubs on the auction, so East has an easy raise to 3 NT with their strong side suits. E/W take six Club tricks, two Diamond tricks, a Heart, and a Spade. South should have kept quiet about their Diamond suit. Crap.

While 6 NT makes, it's a bad contract. Declarer will need the T to fall and successfully finesse for the  Q--too much to ask for. A bit of explanation on the auction:

A difficult hand to bid after partner opens 2 NT (or rebids 2 NT after a 2  opening) is one with five Spades and four Hearts. A lot of players use 3 NT as Flip-Flop Flannery to show this hand. East, holding fewer than three Spades and fewer than four Hearts, has an easy pass.

South is praying that partner has a 4-card major and will bid 3  in response to Puppet Stayman, and for once it actually works. 2 NT would be down at least two and possibly three. 3  is down only one. N/S lose one Spade, three Hearts, and either a Club or a trump or a 2nd Spade (one of those three).

An immediate raise of partner's 2-level minor suit bid should show 4+ card support. West bids 3  to allow partner to show a sixth Spade if they have one, but East is happy to bid 3 NT with their strong Clubs. South should find the Heart lead on the auction, but many South's will lead something else, and E/W will romp home with 10 or 11 tricks (four Spades, four Diamonds, two Clubs, and possibly a Heart). The T is a devastating lead, and declarer has to duck three times to kill the North hand.

Although N/S can make 4 , it's not possible to find that contract. N/S take four Heart tricks, three Diamond tricks, one Spade, and one Club. Clubs is a "frozen suit," meaning whoever breaks Clubs is giving up a trick. The  8 would be a very good lead.

Any West who sneaks in a 3  bid after partner's 2 NT should be applauded. East knows that West doesn't have four Hearts (they bid 2 ), so West can accept the invitation to 3 NT while at the same time offering to play in the Moysian (4-3) fit. Sweet. North will lead their stiff Club.

East will respond positively to any sort of game try that West makes. E/W lose two Clubs, and possibly one Spade and one Heart when they place the  K and  Q in the South hand. Stupid game. North will lead the  6 (MUD).

N/S have a painless auction to get to the 6 NT slam. If North had a doubleton in a side suit, then placing the contract in 6  might be okay, but 6 NT is by far the better contract at Matchpoints. N/S take one Spade trick, five Heart tricks, four Diamond tricks, and two Club tricks. The  7 would be a reasonable lead. If E/W lead a Spade, N/S will probably be content with 12 tricks. On a Diamond lead, it can't hurt for North to take the Club finesse for an overtrick.

A responsive double is a double by the Advancer after:
1) A "fit" auction by the opponents that gets no higher than 4
2) An overcall or a double by partner

In this auction, the responsive double shows 4+ cards in both black suits and the values to bid at the current level (around 10+ HCP or similar playing strength). N/S lose one Heart and one Diamond. The  K would be a good lead.

It will be difficult for N/S to find 3 NT once the Spade fit is found, but some might give it a try. More likely, N/S will overbid to 4  and go down one. N/S lose one Spade, one Heart, and two Clubs.  J is a reasonable lead, although the  5 would be better (hard to find). West might get endplayed when the opening lead isn't a Club.

With a 4-card major, a 6-card minor, and game-going values, transfer to the minor suit first and then show your 4-card major (talk this over with your partner). With a weak hand (less than invitational values), bid Stayman first, and if you don't find a 4-4 major suit fit, bid your minor at the three level to play. E/W will probably lose a Heart, a Diamond, and a Club, although as you can see in the diagram, 12 tricks are there for the taking. The  3 is a reasonable lead on the auction (i.e., don't lead a Heart, a Diamond, or a Club).

E/W are in a "forcing" auction after West's 4  splinter bid. That means that N/S will not be allowed to play the contract undoubled. If North bids 5 , East should double to show two or more fast Club losers. 5  is down three if E/W can navigate the Diamond ruff. South will probably lead the  A on the auction. The only other trick they'll get will be the  A.

North will decline the invitation to 4  based on their pitiful spot cards. At IMPS (a Swiss team event) North should bid game. Many N/S pairs will make four when E/W don't find the Diamond lead (hard to find). On a Diamond lead, N/S lose two Diamonds, one Spade, and one Club. On the likely lead of the  Q, declarer will be able to pitch a small Diamond from dummy on the  K, making four.

E/W do well to reach the Diamond game. E/W lose one Heart and one Club, pitching their Spade loser on the long Clubs. The  K looks like the best opening lead.

3 NT would play better, but 4  is a good contract. N/S lose two Hearts and one Club. The  Q will be a popular lead, and it doesn't cost a trick.

When the opponents are vulnerable, you aren't, and you find a trump fit, bid, bid, bid! Some N/S pairs will compete to the five level, but they won't be happy. E/W lose one Spade, one Heart, one Diamond, and a Club ruff. North's obvious lead is the singleton  8. West wins cheaply and leads  A and another, but North hops with the  K and puts a Heart on the table. South wins and gives North the ruff. Nice defense!

Not much to the auction. South will likely lead a small Club. E/W take two Clubs, three Spades, and two Diamonds before N/S get going. It would be a mistake for declarer to try and set up Diamonds before establishing Spades. A good rule is to look at how many winners are already established in a suit versus how many can be established. Spades - currently 0, possible 3. Diamonds - currently 2, possible 3.

  1. Weak two bid
  2. A small lie
  3. Oops

North's 6 NT raise is automatic. N/S can take four Spades, three Hearts, three Diamonds, and two Clubs. It's not a high-percentage slam--right around 38%. The T is a pretty good lead and puts immediate pressure on South. South should not take the finesse immediately, but should win with the  K.  2 at trick two inserting the T when West plays low. East can win the  K, but can't return a Club.  J from East, won in hand by South, and the  3 hits the table. When the  Q falls, South can claim without the Club hook. Nicely played!

  1. North is showing a full reverse with a 5-loser hand, 4+ Diamonds, and longer Clubs
  2. Easy bid

E/W don't have a reasonable sacrifice over 5 , and they aren't sure 5  is making. N/S lose one Spade and one Heart. This is a perfect hand for a dummy reversal. East leads a Diamond on opening lead (nothing else is better). Declarer wins in hand and leads the T. East has to grab it, since North might have a singleton Heart as well as the known singleton Spade.  3 is next to West's  A, and West returns another trump. When Diamonds split 2-2, the hand is over. Declarer can ruff two Clubs in dummy and pitch three of them on the good Hearts, making five.

  1. Do something smart for once, partner!

Without a Club stopper, West can't bid 3 NT after East's double, and without a fit for partner's Hearts or a sixth Diamond, pass seems best. It is, and E/W collect +300 with best defense. West should lead the  Q followed by the  2. On the third Heart, West discards the  3 (upside-down carding asking for a Spade lead). East leads the  7 and echoes with the  6 when West cashes the  A. West dutifully gives East their Spade ruff and the last seven tricks are South's. Nicely defended!

  1. 15 to 17
  2. Transfer

Not much to this one. N/S lose one Spade, two Hearts, and three Clubs for down one. A trump lead looks correct, and East should play back a Heart to kill the South hand before Diamonds can be established.

If South can double 1  for penalty, they should do that, but many pairs play that a double by South would show 5+ Hearts and tolerance for North's Diamonds (Snapdragon). N/S aren't going to get rich by doubling 1 NT for penalty, so South correctly bids 2 . N/S lose two Clubs, a Spade, and a Diamond.

This one might be flat. All N/S pairs will end up in 4 , and N/S lose only two Spades. The  4 looks like a reasonable opening lead, although a trump isn't wrong.

South would be worried about raising North's preempt if N/S weren't vulnerable, but a vulnerable 3-level preempt should be a nice hand. N/S lose one Spade and one Diamond. East will lead the  5.
