PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

In the fall CBA elections, the following new Board members were elected or reelected:  Jim Meyers, Barb Levinson, and Jerry Violetta.  In addition, the Board selected Mike Dickman to replace Fred Pollack, and Mike Lipp to replace Joe Lutz, both of whom resigned because of current professional and business conflicts.

Our unit officers for 2006 are as follow:  Frank Lichtenberger, President; Patti English, Vice President; Jim Meyers, Recording Secretary; Sandy Orr, Executive Secretary; Carol Greve, Membership Chair; and Potter Orr, Treasurer.  Other key committee chair appointments are:  Pat Newman, Tournament/Special Events and Zero Tolerance; Tom Deddens and Jim Meyers, co-chairs of the Mentor-Mentee Program; and Jerry Violetta, Charity Game and Building Maintenance.

Watch for announcements to be posted soon at the Bridge Center about this year’s Mentor/Mentee Program.

After an exhaustive search for an alternative, we have renewed the lease for our current Bridge Center site.  During the upcoming Spring Regional, May 1-7, an extensive remodeling will be completed.  We are pleased to announce that one of our members, Myrna Rosen, an internationally-known decorator, will play a major role.  If you have any suggestions, please submit them to any board member.  Also, as our remodeling plans unfold, we will be seeking some “volunteers” to aid our efforts.  We are most interested in some help with painting.

Overall the CBA is financially sound and should stay so for the next few years.  However, the number of tables played at the Bridge Center continues to decline.  The evening games, particularly, have declined.   During the remainder of 2006, the Board will be seeking ways to increase play and will reevaluate our business plan.

Regards,

Frank Lichtenberger

President

BIDDING SLOWLY

by

Amit Raturi

I find stories about slow auctions fascinating.  In bridge, every bid takes an ounce of mental energy out of you – especially when you have a good hand.  One wrong move and the hand is a ripe candidate for a “bidding disaster.”  Slow auctions with good hands are the ultimate tests in bridge.  They test your patience, resolve, partnership understanding, and take more energy than any other part of the game.  When opponents blast into a 20% slam and make it on a fortunate lie of cards, you have a right to feel bad – they just saved a lot of their energy for the other boards.

When you pick up Ax, A98xxxx, AQT, Q and partner opens 1NT, your bounds are anywhere from 4H (QJx, QJx, KJxx, AJxx) to 7NT.  Only delicate discovery will allow you to find the right place for the contract. When partner shows 3 hearts by rebidding 3H after a transfer and a 3D bid by you, things are looking better already.  Over 4S (Roman Key Card for hearts), partner shows 2 key cards.  Now what?

Let’s get a picture of their hand: 3-4 spades, 3 hearts (Kxx or KJx), 2-5 diamonds, 2-5 clubs (with A).  Other than the K of hearts and the club A, partner could have 8 (15-7) to 10 (17-7) points in clubs, diamonds, and spades. At worst this is 6 to 8 points if partner has KQJ of hearts.  You can count 10 tricks thus far -- 7 hearts, 1 spade, 1diamond and

1 club -- and 7NT is odds on if partner has:

-diamond K and spade or club K (6 points)

-club K and spade or diamond K (6 points)

-AKJx of clubs but no other K (8 points)

-KJxx of diamonds but no spade or club K (4 points)

-KQJx of spades but no club or diamond K (6 points)

-KQx of spades or club K (8 points), etc.

Bidding 5S should clarify this as partner will bid 5NT with spade K, 6C with club K, 6D with diamond K, 6H with none (this is not possible since that gives partner QJ-, KJx, J-, AJ-) so they have something else worth 2 points.  Partner bids 6NT showing 2 kings. Thus a complicated assessment is resolved easily and the auction proceeds:

1NT        2D

2H           3D

3H           4S

5D           5S

6NT        7NT
